General dentistry is concerned with the prevention of oral health conditions, disorders, and diseases, and the restoration or preservation of optimal oral health. Much of general dentistry aims to stop dental issues before they can begin or to catch them early enough to avoid their progression. However, in cases where a dental issue has already developed, general dentistry services aim to restore the affected area. In addition, our dentists at Belpre Dental Solutions are also able to offer cosmetic dental services as well as pediatric dental services.
Did You Know?
General dentists usually do not specialize in any area of dental specialty. Because of this, they can offer a wide range of services to their patients and have a broad knowledge of dental procedures. This means you can become familiar with your dentist and visit this same dentist for most of your dental concerns.

Do I need general dentistry?
General dentistry is essential to maintain your oral health and prevent the occurrence of serious dental issues. The two main causes of tooth loss are tooth decay and gum disease. Preventative general dental services are designed to identify these issues early on and resolve them before they cause the loss of your teeth.
How often should I visit Belpre Dental Solutions for general dental services?
The American Association of Dentistry recommends that you receive general dental services at least twice per year. However, patients who are at an elevated risk for dental complications may need to visit our office more often. Our dentists can help you determine a schedule that will work for your individual dental needs.
What should I expect when visiting Belpre Dental Solutions for my general dental appointment?
When you visit our office for general dental services, you should expect to receive an oral exam, dental x-rays, and a professional teeth cleaning. These services are the key to preventing dental issues and are the standard procedure for any general dental appointment.
Prior to your oral exam, our dentists will ask you about your medical history, allergies, and current medications. This information can be later used as a diagnostic tool and will be helpful if future treatment is needed. Then, our dentists will exam your oral cavity, checking your teeth and gums for any signs of decay, disease, or damage. Part of this exam will screen you for an early indicators of oral cancer. Our dentists will also check the alignment of your bite and the motion of your jaw.
You will also need to undergo dental x-rays. Dental x-rays usually consist of you biting down on a plastic piece to align your bite and only take a few minutes. Because they are so quick and use very small amounts of radiation, they are completely safe. Dental x-rays are another important diagnostic tool, as they can identify issues that may not be noticed during oral exams.
Finally, your appointment will conclude with a professional teeth cleaning. To begin your teeth cleaning, our dental hygienists will use a special scraping tool called a scaler to gently remove the plaque and tartar deposits from the surface of your teeth. Then, they will brush your teeth with a gritty toothpaste and floss between them to loosen any remaining deposits. You will rinse your mouth with a fluoride rinse to remove the deposits and then receive a fluoride treatment. The fluoride treatment will usually consist of a tray containing fluoride foam that is applied to your teeth for about a minute. Then, a fluoride polish will be painted on your teeth as the final step.
Can I do anything to prepare for my general dental appointment at Belpre Dental Solutions?
Yes, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your general dental appointment. If you are a new patient, it may be helpful to look up directions to our office and plan your route out to avoid the stress of getting lost or being late. New patients will also want to arrive about 10-15 minutes before the start of their appointment to fill out paperwork.
For both new and returning patients, another thing you can do to prepare for your appointment is to make a list of questions and concerns to discuss with our dentists during your appointment. In the weeks leading up to your appointment, you will want to pay special attention to your dental routine and teeth, and jot down any changes. If you are at a loss for what to ask our dentists, here are some possible questions:
- How is my oral health and how can I improve it?
- Am I using the proper brushing and flossing technique?
- Should I be using mouthwash and how often?
- What kind of toothpaste do I need?
- Why are my teeth sensitive?
- Why do my gums bleed when I floss?
How much does general dental care cost?
The cost of general dental care depends on the type of care you are receiving. Preventative dental care is the cheapest form of general dental procedures, with restorative and cosmetic treatments being slightly to moderately more expensive depending on the type of procedure.
If you have dental insurance, many insurance companies provide full coverage for preventative dental services to reduce the likelihood of you needing more extensive treatments later on. Most insurance companies also provide partial coverage levels for restorative and some cosmetic services as well, however this can vary by company. Our office can work with your insurance to get you the most out of your benefits.
